An essential component of YCFP is the involvement of local volunteers. Below is a list of our standard volunteer opportunities including the very popular First Steps Volunteer position. First Steps Volunteers
# Positions Available: Unlimited
Time Commitment: 4 - 10 hours per month
Supervisor: Heather Havey (Latah) and Paulette House (Whitman), Family Resource and Support Specialist
Position Description: Provide emotional support, parenting education, referrals to community resources and follow-up contacts to new and expectant parents; thereby helping develop healthy family relationships to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. Pre-service training and on-going in-service training will be provided.

Skills/Requirements:

First Steps Volunteers need to be able to communicate a sense of caring and understanding to families who are adapting to pregnancy or adjusting to life with a new baby, accept differences in a non-judgmental manner, provide support by listening and sharing information, while maintaining confidentiality and fostering an atmosphere of trust and genuine concern.

Parent Education Intern
# Positions Available: 2 (1 in Latah County, 1 in Whitman County)
Time Commitment: 7-10 hrs/week
Supervisor: Jodie Knox (Latah), Erin Krestian (Whitman)
Position Description: To assist Parent Educators in providing resources and information for families in the Palouse, and assist in maintaining resource files and parent education materials.

Skills/Requirements:

College students majoring in Education, Early Childhood Education or Psychology. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated initiative, and have knowledge of Microsoft Word/ Windows.

Outreach Educator Intern
# Positions Available: 3
Time Commitment: 7-10 hrs/ week
Supervisor: Paige Tracy
Position Description: Three postions each semester to assist in the implementation of the children's curriculum of Set-Up for School Success, the ABC's of Parenting. Three sessions will be offered throughout the calendar year, and each wil overlap with the school year. The first will begin in the late spring, and run into early summer. The next will begin in August and run into the school year. The third will be in the Fall semester. For successful completion, interns must commit to the duration of the seven week course, regardless of how it falls on the calendar year.

Skills/Requirements:

Preferred backgrounds include: Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Human Development, and the Early Childhood Education/Special Education Blended Certificate.
